Project End Date:

Project Description:

This project will examine plastic as a pollutant on Lake Michigan beaches, focusing in particular on microplastics (fragments less than 1 mm in size). Plastic pollution has been widely recognized as a problem in the world’s oceans but plastics in the Great Lakes have only recently begun to be studied. You will research and learn techniques for sampling beach sediments while avoiding contamination from plastic fibers on clothing, and also avoid contamination in the lab. The goals of the project are to quantify plastics in shoreline sediments at a variety of sites and to isolate samples in an effort to determine possible sources of microplastics in the environment. Project is contingent on funding.
