Project Description:

The fabrication and characterization of ruthenium and iron-based polymeric structures on conventional glassy carbon and platinum electrodes has been a stardard of electrochemists for decades. The motivation for this research is to develop paper-based chemically modified electrodes for sensing applications (i.e. development of sensors and biosensors); these electrodes are much less expensive than the traditional electrodes. This is a new research area for the Brown group and the first step will be to gather literature on development of microfluidic devices for electrochemical purposes. During the second week, students will be introduced to cyclic voltammetry for electropolymerization and characterization strategies. Weeks 3-10 will be used to begin developing the paper-based electrodes starting with microfluidics.
