Project Description:

Hope College has received funding from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute to support a Hughes Science Education Scholars Program at Hope College. Hughes Science Education Scholars are Hope College undergraduates who engage in research, either laboratory-, field-, or science-education based, and in a K-12 science curriculum development project. Hughes Science Education Scholars will spend 10 weeks during the summer working with a Hope College faculty member (or members) and must also commit to post-summer continuation of their research work and to participation in the presentation of their projects and HHMI related events. Hughes Science Education Scholars receive a $4,300 taxable stipend for the summer of participation, half-price summer housing on campus, research funds, and travel funds to attend a conference.

All Hope College students who are considering a career as a K-12 teacher, who have an interest in an extended research and curriculum development experience, and who are not graduating in May or summer 2009 are eligible to apply for a Hughes Science Education Scholars Award and are encouraged to do so. Psychology Department applicants should contact a faculty member in the Psychology Department to discuss potential projects and to request a recommendation. Project dates for the Hughes Science Education Scholars program vary from project to project.

To apply for a Hughes Science Education Scholars Award, students should complete the SHARP application process (selecting this project) and then submit a Hughes Science Education Scholars application, which consists of a personal essay, a research/curriculum plan description, a recommendation form from the faculty member in the Division of Natural and Applied Sciences/Psychology Department you plan to work with and a recommendation form from a faculty member in the Hope College Department of Education, and a cover letter with your name, address, e-mail address, phone number, specific title of your project, and the names of the two faculty members you have asked to submit recommendation forms. The recommendation forms may be obtained by contacting Dr. Sheldon Wettack, HHMI Program Director, at wettack@hope.edu. Hughes Science Education Scholars applications should be submitted in paper or electronic form to Dr. Sheldon Wettack (wettack@hope.edu), Department of Chemistry, Hope College, Holland, MI 49423. Recommendation forms should be sent directly to Dr. Wettack by the faculty members. All application materials, including completion of the SHARP application process, are due February 20, 2009.

Please contact Dr. Wettack if you have any questions about this HHMI program.
