Project Description: |
Hope College has received funding from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute to support Hughes Research Scholars in 2009. Hughes Research Scholars are gifted and talented Hope College undergraduates who engage in a sustained student-faculty collaborative research project. Preference is given to new interdisciplinary projects in the biomedical sciences. Hughes Scholars will spend 10 weeks during the summer working on the project, and must commit to post-summer continuation of their research work, to presenting their results, and to participating in HHMI related events. Hughes Research Scholars receive a $4,300 taxable stipend for the summer of participation, half-price summer housing on campus, research funds, and travel funds to attend a conference.
All Hope College students with an interest in an extended hands-on research experience and who are not graduating in May or summer 2009 are eligible to apply for a Hughes Research Scholars Award and are encouraged to do so. Physics Department applicants should contact a faculty member in the Physics Department to discuss potential projects and to request a recommendation. Project dates for the Hughes Research Scholars program vary from project to project.
To apply for a Hughes Research Scholars Award, students should complete the SHARP application process (selecting this project) and then submit a Hughes Research Scholars application, which consists of a personal essay, a research plan description, two recommendations forms, and a cover letter with your name, address, e-mail address, phone number, specific title of your project, and the names of the two faculty members you have asked to submit recommendation forms. The recommendation forms may be obtained by contacting Dr. Sheldon Wettack, HHMI Program Director, at wettack@hope.edu.
Personal Essay. In 2-3 double-spaced pages, write an essay that addresses your career goals and interests and how participating in the Hughes Research Scholars program will prepare you for your career. If you are still exploring options for careers, feel free to include in your essay comments on various options you are considering. You may also discuss in your essay how your own values connect to your career choice and how you think your career might impact social and/or civic concerns such as human health, K-12 education, outreach to the public, environmental protection and the like.
Summer Research Plan: Provide in 3-5 double-spaced pages, the title of the project, the rationale and background for carrying out the proposed research, the research question you plan to investigate, the research methods you expect to utilize, the significance of the project, and a bibliography.
Hughes Research Scholars applications should be submitted in paper or electronic form to Dr. Sheldon Wettack (wettack@hope.edu), Department of Chemistry, Hope College, Holland, MI 49423. Recommendation forms should be sent directly to Dr. Wettack by the faculty members. All application materials, including completion of the SHARP application process, are due February 20, 2009.
Please contact Dr. Wettack if you have any questions regarding the Hughes Research Scholars Program.
