Project Description:

Note: There is limited funding for this project for the summer of 2014. This research project will consider the response of thin-walled metallic structures to impact loading . Primarily, transient finite element analysis (FEA) will be used to predict the response of clamped plate structures to projectile impacts that induce large plastic deformations including failure in the plate. Students involved in this research project will gain valuable experience using a sophisticated engineering software code to analyze the dynamic response of structures under rapid impact/contact loading. Additionally, lab experiments will be carried out to determine the response of thin clamped plates and other structures to projectile impact. Data from the experiments will be used to validate the numerical predictions for plate damage and failure.
